WHAT IS CARBON EMISSIONS?

Every time we burn fossil fuels such as gas, coal or oil - whether it's by heating or cooling our homes, driving our cars, running our appliances or dozens of other everyday actions - carbon dioxide (CO2) is released. In a natural cycle, that CO2 would be absorbed by plants and trees. But we have been steadily releasing far more CO2 than the worlds forests are able to absorb. That's a problem because CO2 is a greenhouse gas, which means it traps heat in the earth's atmosphere. Overwhelmingly, the research shows that this increase in carbons emissions is directly tied to climate change

HOW DOES CARBON OFFSETS WORK?

A carbon offset is proof that one metric ton of CO2 or equivalent greenhouse gas emissions was absorbed, reduced or avoided. Offsets are a way to balance the negative actions of releasing carbon emissions with a positive one, by supporting companies or projects that create the positive change.

WHAT TYPE OF PROJECTS GENERATE CARBON OFFSETS?

Carbon offsets are a global challenge, so the carbon offset projects our customers' energy usage supports span a wide range of initiatives around the world. These may include forest restoration, landfill gas recovery systems, wind farms, energy efficiency for buildings and transportation, even education programs that seek to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Their collective impact is an urgently-needed reduction in the emissions that cause climate change.

All carbon offsets purchased on your behalf are verified by an independent third-party. This ensures that the greenhouse gas reductions are additional to those that would be created in the course of everyday business, and result in real, verified, enforceable and permanent reductions.

HOW DOES BEING A VIRIDIAN SIMPLY RIGHT ELECTRICITY OR GAS CUSTOMER HELP THE ENVIRONMENT?

Viridian uses carbon offsets to counterbalance the greenhouse gas emissions of our Simply Right electricity and gas customers. This significantly reduces each customer's carbon footprint, and is part of a significant, quantifiable collective impact that includes local and global sustainability initiatives

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE IMPACT OF A VIRIDIAN CUSTOMER?

The average Simply Right Electricity customer will avoid 2.241 metric tons of CO2 annually or 2,241 kilos per year.

The average Simply Right Natural Gas customer will avoid 1.387 metric tons of CO2 annually or 1,387 kilos per year.

(1. Annual emissions figures are based on usage of 450 kilowatt-hours per month. 2. Annual emissions figures and equivalencies are based on usage of 4,500 mega joules per month)

HOW CAN I BE COMPLETELY SURE THAT CARBON OFFSETS ARE PURCHASED FOR VIRIDIAN CUSTOMER' USAGE?

Transparency is a key value for us, and every year Viridian publishes a completely Sustainability Report to clarify and illuminate the positive impact of our customers' responsible energy choices. In the report, which is available in print and online, we disclose the type, source and serial number of every carbon offset purchased to support our customers' usage.

To add an additional layer of credibility. Viridian engages an independent auditing firm every year to review the report for complete accuracy. In 2015, as in years past, the international auditing firm of Ernst & Young performed that function, and provided a Letter of Review, which is included in the report.

Based on our reporting timeline, our 2016 Sustainability Report (which will be published in the first quarter of 2017) will provide a glimpse into the projects our Australia customers will support. Because we can only calculate our customers, energy usage and purchase carbon offset to balance it our at the end of reporting year, the exact amount of emissions avoided and carbon offset projects will not be published or verified until our 2017 Sustainability Report. Look for that to be released in the first quarter of 2018.
