There IS a Better Way
On May 17, 2019 Advocare CEO Patrick Wright sent a heartless and stunning email. In the message to all 100,000 Distributors he announced, with little explanation, that AdvoCare is abandoning Network Marketing and eliminating all downline commission payments. Here’s a link to the announcement.
Now, mere days later, the ripple effect is cascading through the MLM industry. We all want to believe it won’t happen to us. We hope and trust that our company is solid. Not subject to an FTC investigation. No trouble on the horizon. Nothing for us to fear. Our management team has loyalty to the field. Pray it’s true.
Associates, distributors and affiliates with virtually every company are wondering if such a fate could possibly befall them too. After all, the distributor agreement every affiliate must sign lays out a few facts. It stipulates clearly that all final decisions pertaining to the operations of any company are the exclusive domain of the corporate management and their board of directors.
We, the Independent field affiliates, distributors, and brand representatives are the best advocates of our industry. We know the power, grace, and benefit to be derived from our devotion. We are the ones responsible for recruiting customers, other associates, and building the base. Yet, we are at the mercy of others. We have no control, no influence, and no input into decisions that affect our livelihood.
It’s a Catch-22. On one hand our corporate leaders encourage us to lead with the products. Convincing others of their superior nature and unique benefits to be found nowhere else. The company’s objective is to build a fan base that is loyal to the brand. We’re told we have all of the benefits of owning our own entrepreneurial venture with none of the downside of a conventional business. On the other hand is the dark side: we have little or no influence on decisions affecting our future.
Ever since Herbalife had its run-in with the FTC at the behest of hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, companies have been mindful of the rule requiring them to be able to prove they are not a pyramid. The test revolves around having customers in addition to distributors. There must be sufficient numbers of people buying products on their own merit, independent of the benefit of a business opportunity.The world has turned and there may be more crushed beneath its relentless roll. The wise will adapt to the new reality.
Here’s the lesson. It was originally explained by Charles Darwin. In his magnum opus, On the Origin of Species, he taught us the value of adaptability. He writes:
“It’s not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It’s the one that is most adaptable to change.”
That begs the question, how to adapt. What is your best course of action to safeguard yourself and your team?Here is the proposal. Brand yourself! Lead with the benefits others receive by affiliating with you. Rather than being a brand representative for a specific company or product line, focus on how you help others be, do, and have more of what they want in life.
