This is Steve Downing and I live in Clearwater, Florida.

I was a member of Open House Toastmasters, a Toastmasters club, in Burbank, California, for about 4 years.

During that time, I underwent a remarkable change in my ability to speak in front of an audience or group.

Before Toastmasters, I lived in fear. I was afraid of being asked to stand up and speak at small meetings, conferences and seminars. That was a big problem for me, since I worked in marketing and sales.

I knew that I needed to remedy this, so I decided to join Toastmasters. 

The first training a new Toastmaster is required to complete is contained in the 'Competent Communication Manual'.

This manual contains ten projects (speeches) - which train one in the fundamentals of public speaking.

While working on my Competent Communication Manual, I underwent fear and nervousness and breathing problems. These problems persisted through speech #5, half-way through the manual. After my fifth speech, the breathing problems went away and I could speak in a more relaxed, normal way. The nervousness diminished.

After that point, I had much more confidence in my ability to speak and although there was, and is, still some nervousness before a speech, I have the ability to control it and overcome it. In talking to experienced speakers, this seems to be their experience, too. 

The nervousness never goes away, but you can get on top of it and defeat it. You can speak and get your message across to your audience - exactly the way you intend!

Now, I actively volunteer for speaking roles and I feel at home in front of the room, in the spotlight!

I recommend Toastmasters to anyone and everyone. As a friend of mine, Jim Barnes, stated, "Toastmasters is the biggest, best-kept secret around!"

Now, here's a tip that everyone in Toastmasters knows. It's called, "having a joke in your pocket!"

When you're meeting a new client, having a joke in your pocket is a smart idea. With a new client, getting the conversation started is important. If the client is tight-lipped or socially inhibited, communication can't flow. Sharing a good laugh will lighten things up and get the ball rolling.

When you're called, on the spur of the moment, to speak to a group - or when you're in the middle of a sales presentation - having a joke in your pocket can be a life-saver. 

Getting the audience to laugh will allow you to ease into the presentation, smoothly and bump-free.  

Getting the audience to laugh will smooth things over in the middle of a presentation, in the case of a heckler or nay-sayer.

It is important to have an APPROPRIATE joke in your pocket - not just ANY joke. You need to be prepared. You need to know before you go: to whom will I be speaking, what is the theme of the meeting, which of my products and services will be most relevant to this customer, what current events are important in this venue, etc.

It is important to have a new, killer joke in your pocket! 

Re-telling an old joke that everybody knows will get you nowhere! 

Telling a lame joke will get you nowhere!
