Why Would a Company Require a Qualifier?

I had a question about one of my direct sales businesses: Why Would a Company Require a Monthly Qualifier?


One of my favorite companies I promote requires a monthly qualifier to stay active as an affiliate, but no quotas. I've experienced start up fees and monthly fees and quotas before, but never a qualifier. I suppose it's a turnoff to some people, however, I think it's a good thing.


First, for those who don't know, a qualifier is a personal minimum monthly or quarterly or yearly purchase requirement to stay an active affiliate eligible for earning commissions. At Nutrisail ours is less than $20 a month and we do not require an autoship like some other companies do. 


Now, I haven't researched the pros and cons of this, but the following are my personal opinions completely. 


Companies prefer you try their products if you want to sell them, right? Whether it's dip mixes, candles, lotions, cleaning products, supplements, or anything else. Once we try the products, if we love them, we can share our enthusiasm and speak more knowledgeably about the products we've tried and our own experiences using them. That alone is a good reason to require a monthly or quarterly qualifier for a direct sales business. 


Next, it maximizes earnings. So how can spending money each month maximize your earnings? When you sign people up under you, they re required to make a purchase each month just like you are. At Nutrisail, you not only receive commissions from purchases of your direct referrals, but on their referrals as well as spillover bonus commissions from your upline! 


Another thing is that it may discourage people who want to join simply because it's free. You need to work the business, and I see many people joining a dozen of these free to join direct sales companies and then doing nothing, or, worse yet, spamming groups wishing for sales and recruits. I'm not saying people will not spam if they join, but I certainly think having this qualifier cuts back on this and allows more quality recruits to join your downline who are serious about making money. 


What other reasons would it be a good (or bad) thing to require a monthly qualifier such as this? I'm interested in other opinions on this.
