IF YOU’RE NOT ON, THEN YOU’RE OFF
Funny thing happened to me a few days ago. I say funny because I thought about an interesting thing that was said by Bill Gates when he said, “If your business is not on the Internet, then your business will be out of business.”
My wife and I love to shop at antique stores. There is one particular antique store near our home that we frequent quite often. I might add that it’s our favorite location. We saw some really nice furniture on one of our visits. It seemed pretty busy so we decided that we would return and purchase the items at a later date.
A few days later we were driving around and decided to stop by our favorite antique store. As we pulled up to the gate we were in for a big surprise. There was a sign on the gate with big bold writing, “Closed For Summer Vacation.” I didn’t give it too much thought. I figured that all we had to do is go back home and just go online and purchase the items that we really, really wanted.
Remember Bill Gates quote? “If your business is not on the Internet, then your business will be out of business.”
Mama MIA! You guessed it. They didn’t have an Internet presence. I was in shock. I thought, “In this day and age, no Internet presence?” We eventually made our purchase at another antique store. I must add that it was a nicer piece and at a better price. Cha Ching! One would say that it wasn’t meant to be at the original store.
Here is my point. We live in Florida. I am sharing this story with you while on vacation in NYC. Your business should be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Whether you are on vacation, across town or in the comfort of your home, you should be open for business. Here’s another important point to consider. Aside from your business open 24, 7, 365. You should utilize the power of leverage. I guess you know what I mean if you’re on this website reading my short story.
Think about this for a moment. Does Amazon shut down when Jeff Bezos goes on vacation? Does Facebook close its doors when Mark Zuckerberg goes on vacation? You get my point.
If you’re not on, then you’re off.
