Because You Think You're A Leader Doesn't Mean Everybody's Following!

"It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership." Nelson Mandela

It is easy to think of yourself as someone with leadership qualities. After all, many of us participated in organized sports in our youth while others may have been in the school band. Then you have individuals who have decided to join our armed forces like I did in 1984. I always felt it takes a special kind of person to be a military man or woman because of the discipline involved. Just like in the corporate world, the military isn't cut out for many people.

I held many leadership positions throughout my life: in school, playing sports, military, and through jobs I've had. Each experience prepared me for the next and I never took those things lightly. It isn't me alone who leads my own organization of independent agents and associates across North America. It isn't all about me that I want them to follow as much as the training systems that I put in front of them to help them be successful.

A great leader has to know how and when to follow first. Follow the same paths of those who are much more successful than myself, those who are making it possible for individuals like myself to realize my dreams. It's easy to talk about what you want, but it's harder to do if you have NO PLAN to get to it! You must be willing to "pay the price" for your success.

If you want to be a great leader, use the #1 cardinal rule: "Treat others as you would want to be treated." No one wants to work for a bully and no one wants to work for someone who won't speak up and defend their teammates. Remember that it's much easier to climb a mountain with a group than alone. There are strength in numbers. Follow these simple tips to gain the respect of your team members and higher-ups as well. Set the example for others to follow. After all, if no one is behind you,  you're simply not leading!
