The power of antioxidants

Most people have heard health terms such as calories and cholesterol, yet the term glutathione is foreign to us. But what on earth is glutathione and why should you know about it. The answer to this is that we all have a big problem, and the answer to that problem is glutathione.

The problem we all face is free radicals, these are unstable molecules with an electron missing that attack cells in the body to take an electron leaving the cell in your body with an electron missing so the process repeats itself causing oxidative stress. The answer to this problem is antioxidants, these work by donating an electron to free radicals therefore stabilising the free radical, neutralising it and stopping the process from repeating itself.

Oxidative stress has been tied to common ailments such as arthritis, dementia and heart decease. And whilst many antioxidants are natural such as vitamin C and Vitamin E, they are not naturally found in the body, so unless we consume them they wouldn't be found in the body. But that doesn't mean that our body doesn't create antioxidants because it does, and the antioxidant that our body creates is called glutathione. Because glutathione is our naturally made antioxidant, and it doesn't have to go through the digestive system it is by far the most important antioxidant, in fact it is often described as the key that allows other antioxidants to work.

Once people learn this they often rush out to buy glutathione supplements, however science has proven that this doesn't have an effect on our glutathione levels as most of it is broken down in the digestive system. Therefore the answer to increasing glutathione isn't taking glutathione, but giving your body the building blocks it needs to create more glutathione.

I actually wrote a blog on this very subject including the best way to increase glutathione levels- you can find this blog post at https://www.scienceforlife.co.uk/blog/glutathione-the-master-antioxidant

If you are interested in health then this is a really interesting subject that I have no doubt you will enjoy learning about glutathione. If you would like to learn more please feel free to send me a message.
