SECURITY ANYONE
Most people I know are in search of security. They are looking for the security of a job with all the bells and whistles. You know what I mean, a secure job with good benefits and a salary to pay the bills. It doesn’t end with just a salary to pay the bills they want some extra money to boot. How dare you! The problem with seeking security is that it doesn’t exist. Security is a state of mind, not reality.
People who fall into the security trap sadly pay a huge price. Those days of working for a large company in return for job security, like my dad did, are gone. If you think that’s bad, it gets worse. There are those who are counting on the government to take care of them in their old age, good luck.
Some people complain and others figure it out. But here is where many make a mistake, myself included. We talk to our family, friends, and others for advice about the possibility of going out on our own. Oh! Oh! More than likely the advice you’re going to get is, “You have to hang on to the security of your paycheck, your health benefits, your sick leave, your pension…” and blah, blah, blah. Before you ask for their advice, you’ve got to ask yourself: Are they financially independent from their work? Are they living their dreams and the kind of life you would like to lead? If your experience is like mine, the answer will always be no. Of course they mean well, but they are caught in the security trap.
Do not misunderstand me. You need to take advantage of every resource you have. You need to embrace your job. A stable job is an excellent resource. But if you want more from life, if you expect financial freedom, your job should be thought of as a transitional resource, not a security blanket. If you find yourself passing up or not seeking opportunities to do what you really want to do because of your job, you’re probably caught up in the security trap.
Real economic security is generated from within. You must develop a passion for what you want. I heard a great business philosopher say, “Life is a fight. When you stop fighting for the things you want, the things you don’t want automatically take over.” You’ve got to see yourself as someone with possibilities in your life. Now that’s real security.
Real security is when you are staring at the boss in the mirror. Not there yet? Click Here.
