Case Study: Celibacy
Being divorced and 65 years old, celibacy is something I’ve been having a lot of experience with lately.
You don’t care, and that’s not the point of this email anyways.
BTW.. at the end of this email I’ll tell you how Frank found out about celibacy.
The point of this email is that your subject line or advertising headline needs to grab your recipients attention immediately!!!
You need to remember, just like you and me, we’ve all got tons of stuff competing for our attention and time.
One of the best ways to get someone’s attention is curiosity. We, just as cats, are a curious bunch.
That’s what all those magazines at the grocery store checkouts try to do. Get you curious about what’s going on in all those celebrities’ lives. That’s how they sell tons of them.
And when you do get your recipient to open your email you better have something pretty damn good to say or offer in order to keep their attention.
Five years ago I read about a study Microsoft did, and they discovered that peoples’ online attention span was about 8 seconds before they moved on or deleted you.
So… once you get their attention and they open your email or look at your ad or article, it’s critical to keep their attention until you get your point or offer made!
Tell them in the first sentence what they’re going to accrue by the end of your email or article. Tell them why they should keep reading on.
Go back to the beginning of this article. I promised you something by the end of the article, how Frank found out about celibacy.

And here’s one more very important point when writing your sales email and articles, ‘facts tell, benefits sell’. What’s in it for the person reading (or watching/listening if you’re promoting on audio or video)?
Look at my website, my first sentence promises one huge benefit! And then a whole bunch of benefits after that… free webpage, free automated email follow-up system, free support.
I didn’t invent this stuff, it’s just been tried and tested, so I use it.
Now as promised, here’s how Frank found out about celibacy….
Celibacy can be a choice in life, or a condition imposed by circumstances.
While attending a Marriage Weekend, Frank and his wife Ann listened to the presenter declare, “It’s essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other.”
She then addressed the men, “Can you name and describe your wife’s favourite flower?”
Frank leaned over, touched Ann’s arm lightly and whispered, “Gold Medal All-Purpose Flour, isn’t it?”
And thus began Frank’s life of celibacy.
