Massive Action Causes Business Destruction
"Taking massive action is a key principle of success!"
The goo-rues and the 'me too!' marketers trumpet this drivel from the rooftops.
But anyone who takes 2 seconds to think about it can see right through this type of feel-good-but-don't-get-anything-done BS.
There's a buttload of this crap floating around, and I've made it my personal mission to debunk it wherever I find it.
Why?
Because people who fall for this whitewash like I did (yes, I fell for it too) will waste years of their productive lives and thousands of dollars running around in circles... and they may never figure out why.
Back to massive action.
I blame Tony Robbins for coming up with and promoting this evil idea. The belief that simply doing a lot will lead to success is ludicrous. If it were true, wouldn't the busiest people naturally be the most successful? A quick look around at all the busy people who never seem to get ahead will prove this belief wrong.
Of course you've got to do something. But not just anything. Doing a lot of any old thing will just put you on the hamster wheel of mediocrity.
"Look at me! I'm taking massive action! I'm on my way! I'm building my legacy!" Listening to wannabe marketers spew that junk is almost as annoying as writers who put an exclamation point at the end of every sentence. Even when the line isn't at all exciting.
You may be thinking "OK, Dave. I get it. But if taking massive action is a waste of time, what should I do instead?"
I'm glad you asked.
The key is doing the right things. Things that will lead to the specific result you're after. If you identify the right things to do, you'll always be moving forward. You won't be taking action just to be doing something - anything - and feeling like you're making progress.
How do you know if you're doing what you should?
You'll know you're doing the right things when the things you do lead to the results you want.
That's when doing a lot of it makes sense.
You could argue that doing lots of different things will help you identify what you like, what you're good at, and so on. And you'd be right. But to continue spreading yourself too thin and not following a plan of doing the right things will only lead to frustration and anger.
I know, because I was in that place for a loooong time. Until I began discovering the right things to do, and started doing them. All the time. That's when I finally turned things around.
