Your Body is an Amazing Creation

The human body is composed of trillions of cells that function together in an orchestrated way that amazes even the most brilliant minds in the world. That’s why scientists continue to study it in hopes of discovering how we can keep it functioning optimally.

Biology 101

Cells are the basic building blocks for all living organisms. Cells provide structure for the human body, process food nutrients and convert them into energy, and carry out many other specialized functions. Cells also contain DNA which provides the biological instructions (like a blueprint to build a house or a recipe to bake a cake) for an organism to develop, live and reproduce.

Planet Earth is a Dangerous Place to Live

Every day we eat, drink and breath toxins that attack us at the cellular level causing damage to our body. In addition, environmental factors such as excessive exposure to UV radiation and tobacco smoke can damage our body’s cells, in particular, our cell’s DNA. And if that’s not bad enough, we are also subject to oxidative stress from the byproducts of metabolism, such as free radicals; and there is no way to avoid this! You don’t have to be a scientist to understand that when too many of the cells of your body are damaged, your health will be compromised and your body will cease to function properly.

We are told that at any given time the human body has about 60 million damaged cells. Our bodies will first attempt to repair damaged cells. However, when this is not possible your body is programmed to get rid of them by a natural process known as Apoptosis.

Apoptosis to the Rescue

Apoptosis is defined as “programmed cell death”. If the body is functioning properly these damaged cells are collapsed (cell death) and engulfed by other specialized cells and life goes on as it should. This is a simplified explanation, but it is not as important for you to understand how it happens as it is to know that it is happening. Because if these damaged cells are not destroyed, they will continue to multiply, producing more damaged cells. Again, the more damaged cells in your body, the more your health will be compromised.

Why Would Apoptosis Not Occur?

In order for our body to carry out instructions from its DNA, there are specific metabolic pathways that need to be opened. These pathways are similar to a door with multiple locks. The keys to unlock these doors (pathways) in order for the body to perform its many functions are specific chemicals from food nutrients.
