You Can Mine Crypto At Home
"You can mine crypto from home."
That's what Tommy said to me when we first met. We were talking about business and investment, and how this looks like it's going to be a big year for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum.
"Hang on a sec, Tommy", I said. "I thought mining crypto takes loads of electricity and huge banks of computers to do the number crunching."

"Why would they do that?"
"Well, imagine if someone discovered oil on your property. You don't know anything about oil, how to get it out of the ground, or how to deliver it to a refinery. But that doesn't stop the oil company. They know all about oil and what to do with it. All they need from you is permission to set up a well on your land. They pay for the well, the pump, the tanks... everything."
"They wouldn't expect you to be able to afford all the equipment necessary to drill for the oil. This works the same way, only they're pulling crypto right out of the air. The hub receives packets of encrypted data from the IOS or 'Internet of Things'. The data is transferred over the Internet to the people who want the information from things like thermostats, dog collars, etc."
"The person providing the service (you, in this case) is paid for providing coverage for their area. It's like owning a piece of the cellular network and getting paid when people used your tower for completing calls."
Now I was intrigued.
"You mean to tell me I can provide this service with a hub, and all I have to do is plug it in and attach an antenna?"
"That's right", he replied. "But it doesn't require an antenna. That's only if you want to make the most money you can by covering a larger area. It's a great idea, though."
By then I had a good enough idea to want to know more. And when I saw the rest of the story, I was on it like white on rice.
