Why You Are Not Rich

Why aren’t you rich? I suggest that it has something to do with the social messages you received while growing up.

Money is power, and most little girls are not taught to be powerful, we are taught to be “nice” (Whatever the hell that means). We are traditionally raised to be caretakers, nurturer, peacemakers and accommodators in the world. We are not really taught to e breadwinners. This explains why even when a woman is the head of the house, she is never quite satisfied with it. Because there is this subconscious idea that bread can’t really be won right unless a man is in the picture.

We are more likely to use our income for our children and household, Men. On the other hand, tend to be prudent about investing and accumulating assets.

We are more reluctant than men to ask for wages, perks, raises or compensation for their services in terms of the value they add to their companies or clients. The sad truth is that this block around asking to be paid what we deserve comes from a deep-rooted uncertainty about whether we really deserve it.

In short, we don’t get rich because we don’t see ourselves getting rich. We are way too concerned about our social roles and being appropriate (and liked). Popular doesn’t pay the bills though. And, in my opinion, most importantly, we simply do not educate ourselves, to make wise financial decisions.

What I find crazy is that women can create massive wealth on their own, but it seems that so many of us are determined not to understand that get what you focus on. Too, many of us are focused on everything, except getting rich. Some of you are saying you want to be rich, and your actions and conversation betray you by revealing that on a subconscious level, you want to stay poor. I say it is time to focus on getting rich.

We need to change our idea about what it means to be rich. To me, being rich is not about money, it is about freedom. The freedom to live my life the way I want to, free of worries and concerns about money. It means giving generously whenever I feel like it. Being rich, mean having control of my time and my life. My definition of rich is the ability to act independently of situation or circumstance. Here is a cold, hard, fact you will never get rich unless you start thinking and acting like a rich person.

Why aren’t you rich? Here is a quick coaching assignment. Finish this sentence, “I would be rich today if I had…” The idea is not to answer with the thing you think you need to be rich. The idea is to identify behaviors you ignored early in life. You might be surprised at what you learn about yourself.

Underneath it all, the reason you are not rich is that, for some reason, you have not engaged in the behaviors that will ultimately lead to wealth. It is important to begin to understand, your views about money. Where did they come from and how are they affecting your decisions? Before you can get rich… you must know what holds you back from getting rich. That is why I became a Wealth Creation and Authenticity Coach for women.
