Do's and Don'ts of Barter and Trade (PART 3)
Do's and Don'ts of Barter and Trade (PART 3)
Another danger comes from letting others know how much you have and where you keep it.. Humans being who and what they are always looking for an edge and those with fewer scruples are not above taking for free something they might otherwise have to pay for.
If you go to market don't take a wagon load full of goods offering a wealth of needed supplies. Instead take several select goods in an amount you can carry and sound out the needs and offerings of others, bringing to market the next time those items in demand, that will most benefit you in trade for the items you want.
Never wear a path to your stash unless you are well fortified, armed and able to repulse anyone wishing to take it from you. A building full of resources will be like a beacon to anyone who is looking to easily profit at your expense, or even at the expense of your life.
Never go it alone, the most successful traders in history always teamed up with others for protection and today is no different. Groups don't get robbed or mugged very often, individuals do, and it usually happens away from the view of others. If you team up with several friends, neighbors or relatives you will be much safer. Keep to well traveled paths and roads and always have a lookout ahead of the group.
I would not recommend that you turn your home, garage, cabin or bunker into an Mini-Mart. First the room required would be phenomenal and second there is no way to anticipate the needs or the unexpected. If you are going to stockpile for barter, be sure you can use the items yourself. There may be a surplus of certain items, lack of demand for others or simply such a short term disaster as to make a huge stockpile unnecessary.
While it is impossible to predetermine all future needs a good rule of thumb is to have essential non-perishables in sufficient quantity to sustain you, your family and/or group for at least 6 to 12 months and a 25% overstock for barter and trade
