How do we measure success?

Are you successful?

What does this mean? What parameters and success criteria are you using?

Being a success is different for everyone. It depends on your priorities.

I am a success. I have a family that I adore, children that drive me up the wall - but I love them dearly. I don’t have a high powered job. (I used to, but left that) I have a roof over my head, not a mansion, but it’s a loving home, and a job I love.  I don’t have millions in the bank, who does?  But I am content. To me that is success.

In business I measure my success slightly differently. There is of course a monetary value to my success. But that is not the only criteria I use. Have I got returning customers? Do people recommend you. Are you learning and building an increasing client base.

This year I have spent a lot of time at Christmas Fairs. Sharing, talking getting to know future clients. Each fair had a different level of success. Some no one bought anything. However from those  fairs I got a future business contact, a future client base and contacts that I will follow up. So yes these  fairs were a success.  I achieved what I had set out to do.

Success also includes reaching your personal goals. My goal this Christmas has been to build up my client base. I may have to do a bit of work to turn these contacts into sales, but I reached my goal. I now have over 400 new contacts to share my products with.

Customers buy from companies they trust, from a relationship built up through recommendation, experience and knowledge. Why do I buy fro one brand and not another? Why do I view this product as more superior than another, possibly as good one? Trust, relationship building, experience.

I used to frequent a top hotel very regularly. I was on first name terms with most of the staff, I knew the general manager. Why did I keep returning? The relationship that I built up, the trust in the service and quality I would receive. I knew the staff knew me and they started to predict my needs. They would already provide services that I regularly used and would offer me a more personal service. That had value to me. Therefore I spent more there, I recommended the hotel, I referred people to them.  This is the sort of service that creates returning customers. This is success.

When looking at my own business. Do I offer that same level of service that I received? Do I know my customers. Can I predict their needs? Am I able to offer them a unique service that they cant get somewhere else?

So to measure your success- have you achieved your goals, have you delivered a service that is recommended, have you built something to be proud of?  Do you have future goals? Do you have a vision of your desired future? Have you got a plan to achieve it? If you can answer yes then your are in the journey to success.

To continue to build your business ask yourself your success questions. Celebrate small successes. Get help to reach those bigger goals. Keep learning. Keep active. Then you will be a success.
