The biggest secret in travel

Any time you book travel--a cruise, vacation package, theme park package, weekend getaway, hotel stays, rental cars--there is a percentage already included in the price that is set aside for your travel agent. If you book your trip through a travel agent, that commission amount is paid to your agent, which doesn't cost you any more money to book your trip. If you don't book your trip through a travel agent, there's no discount for you. You're stuck researching and planning your trip, booking, inputting your credit card information, reading up on the best things to do and places to go, and waiting on hold if you have questions. And you won't get paid for it. The company just lets you do all the work and absorbs the commission amount to line corporate's pockets. 

As someone who regularly booked trips for family and friends, and also gave recommendations and posted about my adventures on social media, I was blown away when I found out I was working for free. I could be getting paid for doing things that I had been doing anyway, and things that I would continue doing anyway. How could I send this commission to my bank account? How could I get my friends and family in on this gig to send their commission that they earned to their bank account? 

The answer is what I consider the biggest secret in travel. Becoming a travel agent. I researched my options and found that the best and fastest way to get started was through a host agency. I found a host that not only gave me my credentials to begin booking immediately, but allowed me to refer my friends and family into the business. I am now sharing this information with you! 

The best part about this job is I am able to set my own hours. I work while my son is at school, and I'm able to spend time with him after school. I have never missed a soccer game, and I haven't had to beg my boss to let me miss work so I could chaperone a field trip. I schedule my work around my husband's also, and his days off are my days off. We have time for dates and connecting with each other. 

I also love that I can work from anywhere with wi-fi. As you can imagine, being a travel agent means needing to travel. Whether it's FAM trips or site visits, I need to be mobile. And the times I get the most travel quote requests are usually when I'm on vacation! People love to see their travel agent traveling! I love that I can take my laptop and book trips from my hotel room or even my car (I'm not the one driving, of course).
