3 questions to ask about purpose
Everyone has questions, some of them are important (did I make the right decision? is she the one? where did I leave my keys....?). But there are three, in life and in your career, which can set the foundation for your future success and happiness. They can be asked at various times in your life, of various people, but I highly suggest you consider asking.
What is the ultimate purpose of this role or situation? This is a bold one to ask, particularly in your career - i.e. to your boss. Sure, we know that daily tasks, meetings (some of them anyway!), status reports, deliverables and goals have a purpose. But I am referring to the end-game, the ultimate purpose. Depending on where you are in your career/ life, and where your boss is, you can expect a very different answer. However, receiving, understanding and even agreeing to the answer can have a major, lasting impact on how you proceed, contribute...and eventually, succeed.
Will you support me in pursuing this purpose? Again, a bold, or at least thought-provoking, ask. This works across the board. To a boss about your job, a domestic partner or family member about your dreams or a major decision, in Faith about a life decision or even of a friend or colleague about an important choice. In addition to revealing potential support, as well as your own character based on how you receive the answer, this can help you determine how challenging of a path forward you face. At a minimum, it sets an expectation.
How do you expect me to achieve this purpose? This one takes boldness as well, and is an open-ended question, which can bring forth a wide array of responses and reactions ("Are you asking me how to do your job?" "Figure it out, buddy". "Well, first you...."). Also, this is the question where you must have a general - or very specific, in some cases - idea yourself about the answer. Getting clear on this point is important; it paves the way for many future actions, decisions and thought processes that hopefully lead you to the most positive end outcome. And that in itself is a worthwhile purpose.
