I have been approached by several individuals recently asking me the same kind of question.

“How do you set yourself apart from the pack when interviewing for a new opportunity?” 

In the early stages of my career in an unforgiving, male-dominated industry, I received the most impactful piece of wisdom. This knowledge came in the form of a constructive criticism from the HARDEST Chef in the entire program, a Woman who, in her time, was in a league of her own.

I came to her for advice about switching from one part time job to another, and the skills that would translate between the two opportunities. I will never forget her asking me where MY personal account of my work experiences was. Where was my journal? My notes? A view and review of the systems that I directly impacted? Instances of meaningful training being given or received? WHERE WAS IT? WHY WAS I NOT DOING THIS?

I knew that part of my personal creative process involves notes and journaling. I NEVER considered the imperative NEED for me to also be logging my career every step of the way. 13 years on the other side, I can personally attest to the power of charting your OWN growth.

I have women ask me ALLLLL of the time HOW I can so quickly find new opportunities, clients, chef gigs…. Whatever. My answer lies in having the confidence in myself and my skills stemming directly from creating a rolling record of them. After a while, your personal awareness of this comprehensive set of skills allows you to differentiate yourself from your peers in side-by-side work, as well as interviews, salary negotiations, having the “Raise” talk. After a while, you stop seeing your inherent skills and abilities ad individual traits, and can start painting with broader, connecting strokes, through skills that just make you BETTER. More intuitive. More observational. More willing to confidently try something new.

I encourage everyone to become an active participant in the logging of their work. It is an experience that can really open up your mind to qualities within you that can allow your true light to SHINE in any work environment.
