A Once in a Lifetime Opportunity

How many times have you heard these words spoken by some smooth talking sales person? I will bet that most people reading this believe that their opportunity IS the one that will change their lives, their bank accounts, their self-esteem, and be that 'Once in a Lifetime' opportunity they have spent their whole life waiting for. But sadly, many will spend a few weeks excitedly marketing their fabulous product/service, then a few months becoming increasingly despondent as potential sales and recruits seem to melt away like snowflakes on the warm upturned palm of an inquisitive child. Believe me, it's not just MLM that carelessly tosses the spent carcasses of the masses aside. It's LIFE. And so it could have been with my Dad. A man of integrity, honor and brilliant ideas. A man with dreams painted in technicolor on the vast canvases of his mind, which he brought to life on wooden work benches in breezy workshops. Painstakingly detailing them into the fledgling patents that filled the filing cabinets of attorneys vaults. Way before the internet invaded lives, these 'patents-pending' sat waiting for the day that he would have the money to set them free. Alas, he did not have the means to nurture them and make them grow, but others did, and like a parent giving up his parental rights, he watched helplessly as Corporations made his technology their own, without so much as a thank you.

A few sharp minded business men would entice him from time to time with commitments of funding to take his life's work to the next level, but without fail, he was sorely disappointed when their contracts and overtures turned out to be nothing more than empty promises disguised as 'Once in a Lifetime' opportunities. Thirty years of hoping and waiting and marking time! Thirty years of dreaming and believing that one day, his time would come and that he would be able to take one of his patents further. Thirty years of never giving up, of never giving in. Thirty years of honing his skills and refining his thoughts.

And then I saw it. For the first time ever, I saw a hesitation, a waiver of resolve, and I knew that if I did not take charge and make it work, it would never happen. It has been so hard for me to stand on the sidelines cheering for a single man fighting a battle against obstacles far greater than himself. This should be his moment of glory! He has surpassed all his other inventions in this, his last effort.
