Network Marketing & Me
Hey Folks, Glad you stopped by. My career started at a young age, working on my families tobacco farm. Boy was that hard work. At 15, I started a public job working in a fast food restaurant. The one thing I learned was “If you've got time to lean, you've got time to clean.” It's pretty amazing I would remember that 30 years later. But there is so much truth in it. If you've got lag time in your business, don't just set around. Be learning, prospecting or training your team. There is plenty to do in any business.
I got off on an important tangent. Anyway, I worked my way through college, working as a Supervisor at an electronics store. My dream job came, teaching computers, to kids. It didn't take long to realize money did not motive teachers. I wanted more. Later, I found a job training adults in business operations. I got to travel and meet new people. It was awesome. The problem was, I was giving my time to someone else in return for a steady paycheck.I didn't mention, starting at 16, I was selling vacuum cleaners in my part-time and detailing cars. I believed in staying busy. To cut things short, the 30 years I spent detailing cars, as a hobby, turned into a very lucrative business. I now work two full-time jobs. I clean cars and do network marketing. I couldn't be happier.
It wasn't until I discovered Network Marketing about the time I was training others. The concept was the same as what I was doing. Training others to do a better more efficient job. I dabbled around with it for a few years, but then it hit me. Why not try it full-time. Of course I failed a few times, but I kept trucking along. One day a person in my upline told me, until I believed in my product 100% and focused on the customer's wants instead of mine, network marketing was not for me. I had to better myself and believe in myself. Even though that was true, the customer didn't want to hear about me or my accomplishments. I had to talk to the customer, repeat their name, ask about them and their goals. Once the customer felt comfortable that he was the most important person in the conversation, it was time to ask for the sale.
One of my most inspirational author/speaker is Zig Ziglar. One of his most famous quotes is: “You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” Another one of my favorite quotes by him is: “You don't have to be great at something to start, but you have to start to be great at something.” This man became like a father to me. I think I wore out 4 or 5 of his tapes, not to mention his books. I went to a conference several years ago and actually got to me my hero of motivation. He was the real deal, just like the father I thought he was. We lost him in 2012, but he was a man of faith, God and family. I'm sure he is still motivating, but this time it is to the angels in heaven.
I guess there is a meaning to all this. One man helped shape an attitude in me. Yes there are plenty of motivational speakers, but he was my hero. Each person should find their own. Listen to their tapes while your in your car, read their books, and books from others. Mostly never stop learning. Sometimes 5 minutes of motivation can change the way you meet your next prospect. Don't just be a leaner, be a cleaner... Ricky Gordon
