How Automation Can Kill Your Dreams

Can automation REALLY kill your dream?

Yes, it can - and it will if you're not careful.

Here's an example of automation gone awry...

I recently got a new truck for my real-life gig. It only had a couple of thousand miles on it when I picked it up. Still had that new truck smell.

But that wasn't the only smelly thing about it.

There's this new-fangled invention called Assisted Cruise Control - ACC for short. What this does is an attempt to drive the truck for you.

Not willing to accept my over 1.5 million miles of over the road experience, the computer thinks it can do a better job of safely getting from A to B. Or at least the guy who programmed it thinks HE can... from a distance... with no experience... (sigh)

Here are some of the things it does:

Hammers the brake when it thinks I'm too close to something (including a car that's turning off the road, so there's no need for me to slow down at all)

Slows down whenever I get within a pre-set distance from the car in front of me (which means it spends all day slowing down instead of going around slowpokes)

Chimes at me when I get within the pre-set following distance (which means it chimes almost constantly when in any traffic because if you back up enough to leave a space, somebody will move into it)

And my favorite...

Makes a loud farting noise from the stereo speakers (it's supposed to make the sound rumble strips on the fog line make when you veer onto the shoulder) whenever it thinks I'm not centered in the lane.

And that's just the ACC. It's also got a bunch of other reasons to make funky noises at me. Which is weird, because "distracted driving" is supposed to be a bad thing. I could eat a sandwich, talk on the phone, and take a selfie all at the same time and be less distracted.

The first time I tried to back into a dock, there was a noise coming from the radar on the side telling me there was an object over there - no crap, computer. it's another trailer in the next dock. It was also making a tone because the transmission was in creep mode. On top of that, there's a backup alarm making its familiar beep, beep, beep.

All that commotion freaked me out when I was doing one of the most dangerous things you can do with a truck - backing up.

Imagine if you had to deal with all that in your marketing. You'd never get anything done because you'd be spending all your time attempting to figure out how to make all that automatic junk work right.

Too many marketers struggle with a similar situation.

But you don't have to.

Quit trying to automate things you're not even successful at.

Know what happens when you automate before you know what you're doing? Besides wasting time, effort, and money getting the automation running, you end up automating what doesn't work.

This means you've got guaranteed automatic failure - and a sure-fire way to kill your dream of online bid-niss fame.

Get your foundation built and make sure you're on the right track before looking for ways to make your job easier.

If you don't, you'll just automate going broke faster.

Here's what to do before you automate.
