What Price is Your Success?

It isn't enough to say that you want to be rich or that you want to make millions online. Those are pie-in-the-sky dreams. They are not based on reality, and because of that, will not be achievable. Am I saying that you can't make millions online? No, of course not. We all know, or know of, people who have done just that. But I would bet you anything that if you were to really question them, 'making millions' was not their initial goal. And it shouldn't be yours.

Success in anything - but in particular Internet marketing - is a matter of knowing exactly what you are going to achieve, before you do or even think anything else. It is about defining the target. The best archer in the world, the one who can split his own arrows in the bullseye, can't score

a single point if there is no target for him to aim at.

Let's Set Your Target…

Forget about how much you've been told you can make. Forget about how much you currently make in whatever you do to make your living. Forget everything and get down to basics. Pick which one of the four target plans I identified fits your situation best and work out what monetary value it has for you:

■ I want to make a bit of extra money on the side Are we talking about an extra $250 a month to help with bills? $250 per month equates to $8.33 per day. 

■ I want to clear my debts . How much are your debts? Be completely honest with yourself because nobody else is going to know. How much, exactly do you need to make?  Now there are two ways to deal with this. Either look at the overall lump sum needed to clear them all in one go, or, if that is too big a figure, work out the total monthly payments you are currently making and double it. Would $500 per month do it? That is $16.66 each day.

■ I want to create a pension for myself. A pension implies regular monthly income, but on the lower side. Is $1000 a month what you have in mind? Set your own number. $1000 per month is $33.33 daily. 

■ I want to build my online income up so I can eventually give up my day job So how much do you need to live on? How much, each month, do you spend on regular bills and payments? How much, each month, do you spend on food. How much, each month, do you spend on keeping a roof over your head? How much, each month, do you spend on clothing? How much, each month, do you spend to maintain the lifestyle you have now? How much, each year, do you spend on vacations and car? Work out the monthly sum. 

All those up. Add in anything else that you are committed to paying out each month. The aim is to get a baseline figure that you have to make to cover your lifestyle as it is right now. Let's say the figure you've ended up with is $5000. It doesn't matter if yours is higher or lower - it is the principle that matters.

Now, to that baseline sum

 add 10% for savings

 add 10% for emergencies

 add 10% for fun

Based on my $5000 baseline, each addition is $500. Making the new baseline $6500.

Now we have to remember the tax man. So many people fail to plan for taxes and cause themselves massive problems as a result. As an aside,although I'm not a financial advisor and cannot give you any tax or accountancy advice, I can say that you need to set up a separate bank account for the tax money so you can save that proportion of your income regularly. And if you don't already have an accountant, appoint one right away. You are now in business, you can't fly blind where tax and company accounts are concerned.

I don't know what the tax rate is where you are, so you'll have to work this one out for  yourself. But let's say, for the sake of example, that it is 30%  Take it away from 100, making, in my example case, 70. Take the baseline sum ($6500), divide it by the 70 and then multiply the result by 100. My new total becomes: $6500 / 70 * 100 = $9,286 Now divide your new total by 30 and that is your concrete goal - your daily earnings target. In my example I get $310.

Don't worry if the figure you get to is much lower or higher than mine - mine is just an example. And don't fret either if it seems unattainable. It isn't. In fact, it is just the start. In case you find financial numbers as boring as I do, that's it. We don't need to work out any more. The exercise is tedious and a little bit scary, but it is really important to do it. If you want to succeed, that is. In each case we can calculate a daily earnings target, ranging from $8.33 to $310. Knowing what you have to do is the absolute first thing you have to do because without that  knowledge, everything else is just floundering in the dark. So now you know how much you need to make, on average, every day, how do you do that? Now you know the scale of the target you have, it is easier to find out what your personal journey may be to reach it. 

There are lots of ways to make a few dollars a day and often, the easiest way to move up from a few dollars to tens or hundreds daily is to simply ‘rinse and repeat’ – if, for example, you learn how to build a blog that will make you $5 per day on autopilot, then over the next few weeks build 20 of them. Some will work, some won’t, but pretty soon you’ll be making $100 daily without any more effort than the first $5 took.
