How to tell the difference between Network Marketing and a Pyramid Scheme

It's amazing sometimes how Network Marketing and Multi Level Marketing tend to get confused with scams, pyramid schemes, or otherwise put in a negative light. I wanted to write this article to go over my experience, and what I see when I look at potential businesses to determine one simple thing.

Should I even be looking at this company?

Yes, the Better Business Bureau, and business publications like Bloomsburg are a great start. Do some reading, do some research, and before you pull the trigger ask yourself a question.

Can I make money selling the product/service, or do I NEED to recruit?

Do I NEED to purchase a minimum amount of a product each month/quarter/year to keep stock? Even if my sales haven't reached that level? (We don't want a garage full of products you can't sell simply to stay in business)

For me, the answer to both of these questions should be no. Of course in Network Marketing you should be able to make MORE money recruiting, but if that's the only way you're just forcing other people into a business and relying on them to stay to make your income.

Instead, make sure your business is geared towards income from sales. If you sell a product that should be the way you make money. If someone you recruit sells a product you certainly deserve compensation for the work you put into training them.

Luckily, there are plenty of opportunities out there that fit the bill here - and it doesn't take much research into the income structure to determine the truth!
