Recruiting Up in Your MLM Business

Today, I want to talk to you about recruiting up in your MLM Business. This is the simple concept of recruiting people at your level of success and motivation, and HIGHER.

What most people in our industry is do is recruit people BELOW their level of success or motivation. They look for people who are broke, unemployed, or down and out. While these folks are GREAT people, they’re not GREAT prospects for your business (not normally anyway).

Many people recruit down because they are comfortable talking to these folks. For many folks, approaching their broke Uncle Larry is a lot easier than approaching their successful neighbor, who owns a large law firm.

In probably 999 out of 1,000 cases, that successful lawyer neighbor is a MUCH better prospect for your business than Uncle Larry.

Why? Because he is a professional. Because he owns his own business. Because he has contacts and credibility.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that it’s not our job to judge people. No one is perfect. We are all human beings. No one is “better” than anyone else.

Instead, our job is to pre-qualify people and look for people who are most likely to be a good fit for what we have to offer. In addition, it makes sense to go after the BEST prospects instead of the worst ones.

Let me give you a few examples to put it in perspective.

# 1 If you were a realtor® selling homes for a living, would you try to sell a home to someone who couldn’t get financing and didn’t want to buy a home? I doubt it.

# 2 If you were selling franchises for a Fortune 500® company, would you try to sell franchises to someone looking for a job? I doubt it.

# 3 If you were hiring someone to fill a position in your sales department, would you look for someone with proven experience or someone who has never been in sales before?

To most people, these examples make sense. You look for the BEST PRE-QUALIFIED prospects.

So, who should you approach about your MLM Business?

This is in my own opinion, but here is what I suggest you do:

• Look for people with entrepreneurial experience

• Look for people with sales and marketing experience

• Look for people who are ultra-successful at what they do

• Look for people who have great people skills and a positive mental attitude

• Look for people that have a large amount of influence

• Look for people who have credibility and contacts

• Look for people who are truly looking to improve their life

Approaching these types of prospects is an example of recruiting up, because if these people do join the business, they will probably be very good at it.

All things aside, you never really know WHO will join the business or excel at it. I just think it makes sense to recruit up whenever possible, so you increase your odds of success.
