Some New York doctors treat coronavirus patients with vitamin C after learning that it is used in China.

The administration of 1,500 milligrams of intravenous vitamin C is more than 16 times the recommended daily dose of the antioxidant, but has resulted in patients who have been treated with the vitamin C performing "significantly" better than those who are not being treated reports the New York Post.

According to pulmonologist and intensive care specialist Dr. Andrew G. Weber, who runs two Northwell Health facilities on Long Island, is given this powerful dose to intensive care patients infected with the novel virus as soon as they arrive in the intensive care unit. The high dose of vitamin C is administered intravenously three or four times a day, he added.

Weber said the inspiration for the treatment came after doctors in Shanghai, China, also used it.

China is conducting a clinical trial of 24,000 mg of intravenous vitamin C per day for coronavirus patients. You can get it directly at the Zhongnan Hospital of the University of Wuhan for 7 days.

Weber explained:

“Those who received vitamin C developed significantly better than those who did not. It helps a lot, but it is not emphasized because it is not a particularly exciting substance. ”

The vitamin C is administered along with other medications such as the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine and the antibiotic azithromycin, various biologicals and blood thinners, added Weber.

While there is no scientific research advocating the use of high doses of vitamin C in the treatment of CoViD-19, intravenous vitamin C has long been used by some doctors to treat cold and flu symptoms.

According to a study published in 1999, "the reported flu and cold symptoms in the test group decreased by 85% after administration of very high amounts of vitamin C compared to the control group."

The study concludes that

"Vitamin C in very high doses, given before or after the occurrence of cold and flu symptoms, relieved and prevented symptoms in the test population compared to the control group."

According to Weber, coronavirus patients experience a dramatic drop in their vitamin C levels when they experience sepsis, the potentially fatal inflammatory response to CoViD-19 infection.

He continued: "It makes perfect sense to maintain this vitamin C level."

Clinical trials for treatment began on February 14 at Zhongnan Hospital in Wuhan, China, where the disease quickly broke out last December. The study is expected to run until the end of September. The results should then be published.

On Tuesday, US hospitals in New York were given permission to use a mixture of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin to treat critically ill patients on this basis.

President Doland Trump has tweeted that the cocktail "has a real chance to be one of the greatest turning points in the history of medicine".

However, some experts point out that the ability of experimental intravenous treatment to fight pneumonia has not been proven.

"Although vitamin C has a certain effect on the common cold, it is unlikely that taking large amounts of vitamin C supplements can cure a COVID-19 infection - or have a greater effect at all," wrote Peter McCaffery, professor for biochemistry at the University of Aberdeen for the academic website 'The Conversation'.

Dr. Carol DerSarkissian, doctor and assistant professor, told MedicineNet:

“Your immune system needs vitamin C to function properly. But additional amounts don't help you avoid a cold. It may make it go away faster or not feel too bad if you take it before you get sick. ”
