Cruises in time of Covid19
No one knows exactly when the virus that would later be dubbed Covid19 first appeared, but by the end of the pandemic that followed, more than 80 percent of the population in many countries had been infected with it. If you ever find yourself faced with this terrifying possibility and you’re looking to get out of town quickly, cruise ships can provide an excellent option if they are not already full of sick passengers and crew members. Here are some tips on how to secure a berth on your favorite cruise line during a pandemic.
What is CoVid
CoVid is a small, neurotropic, non-enveloped virus that carries RNA genomes. There are 4 known strains: Astrovirus (ASTV), Norovirus (NORV), Sapovirus (SAPV) and Vesivirus (VSV). This acronym is often used to describe the viruses associated with acute gastroenteritis and represents a group of agents that each cause explosive watery diarrhea through infection from food or fecal-oral transmission.
CDC updates
The CDC has updated their warnings on traveling internationally and have included cruises as a risk. People with chronic diseases or compromised immune systems, young children, pregnant women and elderly people are at a greater risk. If you’re considering taking a cruise or other type of trip to an area that is affected by covid19 please make sure you talk to your doctor before traveling. The importance of hand washing can not be stressed enough if you do choose to travel out of country.
Vaccinations
Before boarding a cruise ship, check with your local health department to find out what vaccines are required and recommended for each country you’ll be visiting. While most routine vaccinations aren’t necessary, you can get everything from hepatitis A to tetanus in some developing countries. If you do need a vaccination, make sure you get it at least two weeks before travel so your body has time to build up antibodies against the disease.
Staying healthy on board
When on board a cruise ship, follow these tips to stay healthy and minimize your risk of contracting Cruis19. It’s important to remember that Cruis19 is one of many conditions you can get while traveling. To avoid getting sick during your trip, be sure to wash your hands frequently, drink plenty of water, and use bottled beverages when possible. And don’t forget about basic food safety best practices—this includes keeping raw meats separate from vegetables/utensils and thoroughly cooking all meals.
Preparing your cabin
It’s important to make sure your cabin is as germ-free as possible. Check your deck plans or get a good travel guide book to figure out where you’ll be spending most of your time on board. Remember, most ships have pools and hot tubs, so clean bathrooms aren’t guaranteed—or available 24/7. It may seem like overkill, but if you are worried about catching an illness while on vacation, it's worth it to invest in a portable sanitizer (most hotels supply these) and wipe down surfaces throughout your journey. You can also order anti-bacterial wipes from Amazon or find a store that sells them near you; they're useful for killing germs and keeping everything tidy at home too!
